The Thanksgiving table has a lot going on: the turkey, the sides, the place settings and at least one relative with strong opinions about all three. The centerpiece shouldn’t add to the stress. A good one doesn’t need to be elaborate, only thoughtful, and it’s easier to pull off than you’d think.
Below are three tips for building a DIY Thanksgiving centerpiece that looks polished without being complicated or expensive. When you’re ready for more inspiration, browse my Pinterest board of Thanksgiving centerpiece ideas.
Minimalism works. Mimic the outdoors with minimalist, twiggy arrangements or simplify your designs by creating something with only one to two elements. Accenting with candles and gourds or pumpkins elevates the look and adds intentionality to a simple design.
Go foraging. I’m always surprised by what I can find on a walk - even in the late autumn. Interesting branches, birch leaves, acorns, and dried ferns all bring a little of the season’s beauty inside. You’ll create a design that doesn't cost anything to make and you’ll enjoy the outdoors while you’re at it.
Go high or low. When it comes to centerpieces, avoid the middle height range so as not to block anyone’s view or conversation. Tall, branchy designs rise above the line of sight while low, gourds and greenery placed on the table sit below it.
